Coats, Sizes, and Generations

Coat Colors
Bernedoodles and Aussiedoodles are known for their beautiful and unique coat patterns, and at Our Appalachian Doodles, we offer a variety of patterns for you to choose from. Our Puppies come in several coat patterns, including tricolored, merle, phantom, parti-colored, etc.
Doodle coat colors are often described differently because of the diverse genetic mix created by breeding a poodle with an another breed, leading to a wide range of possible colors and patterns depending on which genes are inherited from each parent, with the poodle's varied color genetics contributing significantly to this variety; essentially, the "doodle" coat color can vary greatly based on the specific combination of genes from the poodle and the other breed involved, resulting in different terminology to accurately describe the different color variations.
Key points about doodle coat colors:
-
Genetic diversity:
Poodles have a large pool of color genes, which means when crossed with another breed, the resulting doodle can inherit a wide array of colors not typically seen in the other breed alone.
-
Terminology variations:
Different breeders or breeders of different doodle mixes might use slightly different terminology to describe specific color patterns, leading to variations in how coat colors are described.
-
Patterns and markings:
Beyond just base colors, doodles can have various patterns like "phantom" (dark markings on a lighter background), "parti" (large patches of white), or "merle" (mottled color with irregular patches) which further add to the complexity of describing their coats.
Coat Color Examples
TRICOLOR
A Tricolor is described as having three colors, this includes a single coat color (black or brown) accompanied by white markings on the face/snout, chest, feet, and tail along with tan points that can present themselves on the cheeks, above the eyes, chest, legs, and rear.
MERLE
A Merle is described as a single color (black or brown) with a gene modifier which creates darker patches at random on a diluted base coat color. This creates a distinctive "speckled or marbled" appearance; essentially, it's a unique variation of the standard merle pattern found in Bernedoodles and Aussiedoodles. The Merle coat color may also be referred to as "blue" or "red".
PHANTOM
A Phantom is described as having two colors, this includes a single coat color (black or brown) accompanied by tan points that can present themselves on the cheeks or snout, above the eyes, chest, legs, and rear.
PARTI
A Parti is described as having a coat that is at least 50% white with patches of another color. The term "parti" is also known as "piebald". The secondary color is usually marbled throughout, but can be found in irregular or random patches. The coat's blend evolves as the dog matures.
BICOLOR
A Bicolor is described as having two colors, this can include a single coat color (brown, black, red, or blonde) accompanied by white markings on the face, chest, feet, and tail or small white patches on the chest, snout, or toes (also known as "abstract").

SOLID
A Solid is described as having a single coat color from head to toe. Solid colors can be any of the colors that poodles come in, such as black, chocolate (red), gray, blue. creme, white, etc.

Sizes
Bernedoodle and Aussiedoodle sizes are determined by height, not weight. The size of a puppy is usually an average of its parents' sizes. When choosing a doodle size, you can consider your lifestyle and activity level. For example, if you enjoy outdoor activities and have a high-energy lifestyle, a Standard or Mini Bernedoodle or Aussiedoodle might be a better fit. If you prefer a more relaxed lifestyle, a small size might be more suitable. You can also consider how much time you'll have to spend with your dog.

Aussiedoodle & Bernedoodle Generations
AussieDoodle & Bernedoodle generation labels and their meanings:
-
The F stands for "Filial Hybrid." This means that it is a hybrid dog that came from two purebred
dogs of two different breeds.
-
The number is the generation of the Doodle. 1 means first generation, 2 means second generation, 3 means third generation, etc.
-
When a Doodle generation includes a B it means that it is a backcross. Backcross means that the current Doodle generation was bred back to a Poodle or Doodle.
